In his memoirs Gino Severini recalls the spring and summer of 1917 as a period of intense intellectual exchange with his friend Pablo Picasso, who had just left Italy, and was occupied with the tour of Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. In Rome, Picasso was attracted to characters in traditional costume. Severini then, riding on the wave of fashion started in Paris by the Ballets Russes, also offered his own Cubist version of the Ciociara, distinguished by strong geometric traits.
