“i can remember there was a big international exhibition of informal painting at the künstlerhaus, it must have been in 1959 or 1960. there, for the first time, i saw a tàpies, a mathieu, a de kooning, the americans, sam francis and others, this gestural painting fascinated me beyond belief. i saw that these painters were doing the same thing on the picture surface, as i wanted to do in the theatre. it was the beginning of my painting. i immediately began with the informal painting and the splattering of colour onto surfaces. that was the start of my action performances.”
