Ippolito Scarsella, called lo Scarsellino

Ippolito Scarsella, called lo Scarsellino - Obrazy starých mistrů

(Ferrara 1551–1620)
Madonna and Child with Saint Michael the Archangel,
oil on canvas, 87 x 69.5 cm, in a tabernacle frame

Provenance:
sale, Ader Picard Tajan, Paris, 25 April 1990, lot 68 (as Florentine School);
sale, Finarte, Milan, 29 November 1990, lot 106 (as Ippolito Scarsella);
Private European collection

Literature:
M. A. Novelli, Scarsellino, Ferrara 2008, pp. 252–253, fig. 245, p. 326, no. 245

The painting is registered as a work by Scarsella Ippolito, called lo Scarsellino, in the Fototeca Zeri, under no. 56407.

The present painting was published in Mariangela Novelli’s 2008 catalogue on Ippolito Scarsella (see literature). It depicts an affectionate Madonna and Child in the company of the Archangel Michael.

According to Novelli, the Child leaning affectionately close to his Mother, and the Archangel emerging from the semi-darkness serves as a warning for the viewer (and is depicted in a similar way in other paintings by the artist), and displays the sensitivity that characterised Scarsella’s work during the later period (see literature). The painting should therefore date to the period between 1610 and 1620.
