Provenance:
Galerie Schmela, Düsseldorf 1960
Knobloch Collection, Stockhausen/Krefeld
Private Collection, Germany

The drawing “Mädchenkopf” (Head of a Girl) is an up until now “never published drawing, which on account of its quality must be judged as an authentic graphic work by Joseph Beuys. Without any doubt whatsoever, the signature and date are the handwriting of Joseph Beuys. Equally, the drawing itself bears the artist’s unmistakeable handwriting, whereby in addition this is characteristic of the movement of his lines in 1954. (...)

The drawing shows a “Head of a Girl”, seen from behind in half profile; a hair bow in the middle- and foreground of the sheet sets the tone; then, somewhat deeper in the picture plane, the neck and shoulder line are emphasised as once again slightly bulging towards the foreground.

The gaze of the girl is cast downwards to the left. Together with the profile line of the cheek, all of this adds up unequivocally to the drawing of the bust of a girl. A vertical line at the left next to the line of the throat consolidates the architecture of the drawing within the movements of the lines.”
