Georges Desmarées

Georges Desmarées - Obrazy starých mistrů

(Gimo 1697–1776 Munich)
Portrait of an elegant lady in hunting costume, probably Electress Maria Anna of Bavaria, Princess of Saxony(1728–1797),
oil on canvas, 112.4 x 85.1 cm, framed

We are grateful to Helmut Börsch-Supan for identifying the present painting as a work by Desmarées. A certificate is available.

The present portrait is a characteristic work by the artist and compares to Desmarées’s portrait of the electress dated to circa 1754 and now preserved in Augustusburg Palace in Brühl. Similar to the present portrait, in the Augustusburg painting Maria Anna wears a red and gold-coloured hunting costume, devoid of any medals or other decorations signifying her rank. Börsch-Supan also compares our portrait to a painting sold at the Vienna Dorotheum on 6 September 2007 as lot 150.

Maria Anna of Bavaria was the daughter of Elector Frederick August II of Saxony (August III of Poland). In 1747 she was married to Elector Maximilian III Joseph of Bavaria, the last member of the Bavarian branch of his dynasty. Their marriage remained childless. She spent her years as a widow at Fürstenried Palace near Munich.
