The present painting closely relies on the paintings of birds by Melchior de Hondecoeter, whose decorative compositions were so successful that contemporaries like Jan Weenix (1640–1719) imitated his style. Adriaen de Coorte (circa 1665 – after 1707), a painter of still lifes, is also known to have copied paintings by Hondecoeter, with whom he probably also collaborated for a while.
