Giuseppe Ciaranfi
(Pistoia 1838–1902 Florence)
A declaration of love, signed G. Ciaranfi,
oil on canvas, 90 x 51 cm, framed, (Rei)
Provenance:
European Private Collection.
Catalogued in:
Thieme-Becker, Allgemeines Lexikon der Bildenden Künstler, von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart, E. A. Seemann, Leipzig 1912, vol. VI, p. 563 (“Una dichiarazione d’amore”)
Giuseppe Ciaranfi, who received his training at the Academy of Florence under Enrico Pollastrini, depicts here a pair of lovers in the typical clothing of the Italian Campagna. The young beauty leaning on the house wall appears to distance herself from the attentions of the young man, who holds onto her arm with seeming desperation. Ciaranfi chooses lush, potent colours, skilfully executing his treatment of the various surfaces, including the material of their clothing, the stone wall and the soft skin of the represented characters. In this we can recognise the artist’s academically trained style. A lithograph of this painting can be found in the Kunsthistorisches Institut (KHI) in Florence.
