This painting comes with a certificate issued by Claudia Nordhoff. The painting dates from 1781, the same year when Hackert completed two large gouaches for the casino of Prince Paolo Aldobrandini Borghese in Frascati. The present picture probably served as a preliminary study for the painting Landscape with a Waterfall, which shows two almost identically positioned animals.
