The present painting is sold with a certificate issued by Helmut Börsch-Supan. In 1725, Johann Christian Fiedler, the region’s leading portraitist, was appointed court painter to the Hessian landgrave in Darmstadt. He painted numerous self-portraits. The present painting is based on a signed version dated 1752 that appeared on the German art market in 2007.
