Jacob Huysmans arrived in England around 1660 and soon became one of the most popular portraitists at the Stuart court of King Charles II. The artist probably received his most prestigious commissions from maria Beatrix of Modena, , the wife of the future king James II. This rediscovered portrait is a characteristic work by Huysmans, about whom Samuel Pepys said that he outrivaled Sir Peter Lely by far. It is typical of his art that he staged his sitters in pastoral scene. A comparable painting is Huysmans’ portrait of Edward Henry Lee, 1st Earl of Lichfield, and his wife, Charlotte Fitzroy, as children (1674, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne).
