Ambrosius Bosschaert II
(Arnemuiden 1609–1645 Utrecht)
A still life of flowers with shells, insects and a lizard,
oil on panel, 52.7 x 35.5 cm, framed
We are grateful to Fred Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, for confirming the authenticity of the present painting.
It seems that Ambrosius Bosschaert II, son of the still life painter of the same name, was trained by his uncle, Balthasar van der Ast. Nevertheless his works are closely related to those by his father. In his later compositions, the younger Bosschaert arrived at a style of his own. The relatively high view-point has been lowered and the outer contours of the bouquets of flowers have changed from the form of a circle to that of an oval or even triangle that exhibits asymmetrical tendencies, while the bouquets themselves have become more open and voluminous, with the insects surrounding them appearing more lively and dynamic (E. Gemar-Koeltzsch, Holländische Stilllebenmaler im 17. Jahrhundert, vol. 2, Lingen, 1995, p. 170).
