The present work relies on Guido Reni’s Christ on the Mount of Olives (Sens, Musée de Sens),
which was painted in 1607, a terminus post quem for dating of the present composition, which was executed by a painter in Reni’s circle. Reni’s painting, which Malvasia mentions as figuring in the collection of Cardinal Mazarin, served as the basis for several engravings that ensured the dissemination of this successful composition.
