‘Every contrast between essence and its manifestation, an end and its means, may become ridiculous - a contradiction through which a phenomenon sublates itself and the end deprives itself of its goal in its realisation. With regard to the comical, however, we must make a more profound claim. (...)
For the comical includes an infinite good mood and the confidence to be completely above one’s own contradiction without being bitter or sad, the bliss and snugness of subjectivity, which, in its self-confidence, can endure the dissolution of its ends and realisations. The rigid intellect is least capable of this precisely when in its behaviour it becomes most ridiculous to others.’ From: Erwin Wurm, Fichte- Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Vorlesungen über Ästhetik III, Frankfurt/Main 1993, p. 527f.
