A bay horse from an imperial stud in the levade

Against the backdrop of a park landscape, an Andalusian stallion is depicted in the levade. On the park wall on the left-hand side it is possible to recognise two reliefs showing a Roman emperor on the left and a Turkish sultan on the right. This could have been intended as an iconographic allusion to the conflict between the Habsburg monarchy and the Ottoman Empire, but may also provide the identity of the probable patron of this portrait of a horse. Johann Leopold Axtmann was the most important student of the horse painter Johann Georg von Hamilton. In his later years he entered the service of Count Franz Joseph Czernin of Chudenitz.
