(Siegen 1577–1540 Antwerp)
The Rage of Achilles; and Achilles Wounded
oil on canvas, each 114.4 x 115.5 cm, framed (2)
Provenance:
with Bertil Rapp (1922–1956), Stockholm
These two paintings are probably preliminary studies made in Rubens’ workshop for the tapestry cycle featuring scenes from the legend of Achilles. Apart from slight modifications, the present paintings are identical to the modelli on panel that Rubens completed with the assistance of a workshop collaborator and which are now in the collection of Count Seilern in London. The present pair might therefore either represent a further step in the preparation of the cartoons for the giant tapestries (the cartoons were lost as early as circa 1670) or they may be ricordi by a workshop collaborator of compositions that were deemed particularly accomplished. That the two paintings were indeed executed in Rubens’ workshop is corroborated by the fact that the London modelli must by all means have been known to the artist of the present compositions. The modelli had probably remained in Rubens’ workshop until they were acquired from Rubens’ estate by Fourment, who owned them until 1643.
