Spanish School, 17th century

Spanish School, 17th century - Mistrovské kresby, Tisky do roku 1900, Akvarely a miniatury

View of the Porta del Popolo in Rome, the cupola of Santa Maria del Popolo in the background, brush and black ink, grey and black wash, on laid paper, framing lines in pen and black ink, 10 x 14,2 cm, inscribed "porta del poeblo" in pen and black ink on the reverse, mounted, framed, (Sch)

Provenance: Collection William Pitcairn Knowles (1820-1894), Rotterdam & Wiesbaden (Lugt 2643); Private Collection, Germany.
vThe drawing was once attributed to Thomas Wijk and shows an old view of the Porta del Popolo seen from the east, from the location of todays Piazzale Flaminio. In the mid-17th century numerous international artists travelled to Rome in order to deepen their studies of Roman antiquity on the models of ancient statues and the remains of significant monuments. A great number of topographic drawings by foreign artists, who stayed in Rome in the 17th century, are attributed to Asselijn, Breenbergh, Wils, Worts, Wijck, and their circles or followers. The present drawing is stilistically close to one of the mentioned Flemish draftsmen, but may derive from a Spanish artist according to an inscription on the reverse of the sheet.
