Every application of a plot reveals new effects that will join the figurative knowledge of his [Günther Förg’s] constantly expanding repertoire. Let us, for instance, consider the following plot: painted grids made of very short, intersecting lines. Such grids can be loose or compact, and make lavish or sparing use of colours. In the end one can also vary the length of the lines, or loosely and randomly combine fragments of different grids in a sort of collage. [...] It is evident that the grid method, in the relaxed way Günther Förg applies it, is inexhaustible. He is an adventurer. The early abstract masters felt the urge to control their practice. They were very cautious, Mondrian and Malevitsch. From their writings we know to what extent they regarded their art as spiritual. They needed that sense of comfort. Schwitters and Miró were less principled, but they still regarded the philosophical specialness of producing abstract art as their responsibility. None of the aforementioned inhibitions bother Günther Förg. For this reason, in his laconic plotting of pictorial constructions, he is able to open up and realise the entire spectrum of visual richness that only abstract art can offer.
