Pietro Barucci
(Rome 1845-1917) Farmer with Buffalo, signed Pietro Barucci, oil on canvas, 60 x 110 cm, framed, (GG)
Provenance: From the artist’s family.
Pietro Barucci captured the many beautiful views and sights he saw during his extensive travels through Italy. However, he rarely travelled far from Rome, largely observing his rural scenes in the marches and fields bordering the city, and entering his impressions in notebooks. He undertook numerous sketches and executed studies in watercolour, such as Returning from the Country (lot 38), and these sketches served to aid his memory when executing his paintings in his studio in the Via Margutta in Rome. Barucci’s great love for his home town of Rome would remain a key feature of his oeuvre.
He studied at the Accademia di San Luca under Achille Vertunni (1826 - 1897), adopting his teacher’s motifs and realistic painting style to depict the Roman Campagna.
The collection here demonstrates Barucci’s love of painting the natural world and his fascination for the Roman Campagna, for example in his representation of the Pontine Marshes (lot 40), the views of Palo Laziale near Rome (lot 47), or the Abruzzi (lot 46). The collection is rounded off with a panoramic view of Sermoneta (lot 45) and the pinasters in the park at the Villa Borghese (lot 44).
We are grateful to Giovanni Barucci for confirming the authenticity of the works.
