We are grateful to Matthias Kunze for confirming the authenticity of this painting. A written certificate (August 2014) is available. Kunze writes: “The present painting fits seamlessly into a group of half-figure images of old apostles, such as Saint Jerome and Lot in the Old Testament, created by Seiter in the style of Venetian Tenebrism”. He compares it with Seiter’s Saint Jerome in the Old Masters’ Picture Gallery in Dresden and with an image of the Apostle Paul in the collection of Count Schönborn in Pommersfelden Castle. He dates the painting to the period of Seiter’s sojourn in Rome (1680/90). Matthias Kunze will include this painting in his forthcoming supplement to the artist’s catalogue raisonné.
