Gabriele Salci
(Rome 1681–documented until 1720)
Birds in a landscape,
oil on canvas, 98 x 137 cm, framed
Gabriele Salci was a follower of Christian Berentz and influenced by Cristoforo Munari. He produced impressive still lifes with Nordic finesse, such as, for example, the painting, Crystals, fruits, a violin and a parrot (Prince Liechtenstein Collection, Vaduz). Art historical research on Salci stresses the vital importance of the artist’s formation, who experienced various influences in Rome towards the end of the 17th century. Alongside classical still lifes, Salci also had a penchant for hunting scenes and executed paintings in the style of Baldassarre de Caro, focusing on pictorial details and the use of light.
