Portrait of a Lady, possibly Eleonora de´ Medici, Duchess of Mantua (1567–1611)
oil on canvas, 105.5 x 80 cm, framed
Provenance:Private collection, Cremona
The present portrait is stylistically close to the work of Sofonisba Anguissola and it has been suggested that the sitter is Eleonora de´ Medici, Duchess of Mantua.
Eleonora de‘ Medici (1567–1611) was a daughter of Francesco I de‘ Medici and Johanna of Austria, and grand daughter of Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor, and Anna of Bohemia and Hungary. She was a family member of the House of Medici and the sister of Marie de‘ Medici, Queen of France. She married Vincenzo I Gonzaga in 1584 and became Duchess consort of Mantua. Her daughter, also called Eleonora, married Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor.
The present portrait has a severe atmosphere and may have been executed on occasion of the death of Eleonara´s uncle Ferdinando I de´ Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1609. The silver chain with the two rings may refer to her father and uncle and the ermine trimmed coat may represent her connection to the ruling House of Medici.
