Aloys Zötl

From the 1840s onwards Zötl increasingly depicted lower animal species. He classified the animals according to mammals, monkeys, birds, fish and amphibians, insects, worms and molluscs. He numbered them on the sheet and created two types of pictures: the scenic picture of an animal and the scientific information panel. The latter’s quality lies in its surprising degree of abstraction which becomes even more impressive through to reduction of the depiction to one dominant color.
