Franz Caspar Sambach

Franz Caspar Sambach - Mistrovské kresby, Tisky do roku 1900, Akvarely a miniatury

(Breslau 1715-1795 Vienna) An allegory of Regency, pen and brown ink, grey wash, on laid paper, 24,5 x 37,7 cm, fixed to an old support, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

The present drawing is a composition design for a relatively small ceiling painting with curved margins and bevelled edges. Crown and scepter which the young man is receiving and holding in hands point to an allegory of regency. Stylistically the drawing may date from the second half of the 18th century and may have been executed more closely between 1760 and 1770. The figures are very subtly drawn and look almost abstract, whose effect is somewhat softened through the wash. Angular lines without a precise arrangement of the figures are stylistical means which point to the circle around Paul Troger as for example Josef Ignaz Mildorfer (Innsbruck 1719-1775 Vienna) or Franz Caspar Sambach (Breslau 1715-1795 Vienna); the latter’s more sensitive draughtsmanship seems to be closer to the present drawing than others. (see Waltraud Hauk, Franz C. Sambach, Diss. phil., Vienna 1985, particularly Fig. 97, Crowning of Mary, pen and grey ink, Albertina Vienna, Inv. 23180).
