Attributed to Giovanni Battista Paggi
(1554-1627) Female half figure, gazing to the left – study of a sybil, pen and brown ink, over traces of pencil, on laid paper, 14,8 x 13 cm, old mount, browned, somewhat stained, partly minimal losses of paper, mounted, unframed (Sch)
Literature: For comparable drawing by Giovanni Battista Paggi see: Christel Thiem (Ed.), Italian Zeichnungen 1500-1800. Bestandskatalog der Graphischen Sammlung der Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, Stuttgart 1977, p. 26); Thomas le Claire Kunsthandel, Katalog III, Handzeichnungen alter Meister 1500-1800, November/December 1985, p. 17, No.7.
The present drawing may belong to a series of similar drawings with depictions of sybil-types by Paggi. The spontanous, rapid pen stroke, which is reminiscent of Luca Cambiaso (1527-1585), is typical for Paggi‘s draughtmanship. A comparable study of a sybil from the collection of Otto Wessner, St. Gallen (Lugt 2562a) emerged on the Hamburg art market in 1985: Sybilla Persica ("Sibbila persica"), pen and brown ink, 16,5 x 11,7 cm, see: Thomas le Claire Kunsthandel, Katalog III, Handzeichnungen alter Meister 1500-1800, November/ December 1985, p. 17, No. 7.
