Inscribed on the reverse: Pyramus and Thisbe/ Angerstein Collection Gerard Lairesse 1641–1711 and with a clipping from a late-19th-century auction catalogue, with an attribution of the picture to a late-17th-century Italian painter.

Dr. Jan de Maere has suggested an attribution to Theodor van Thulden (1606–1669).
