We are grateful to Louis Waldmann for confirming the authenticity of the present painting.
The present painting is a typical work of the Florentine Mannerist Pier Francesco di Jacopo Foschi. He painted several variants of this composition, such as the painting sold at auction at the Vienna Dorotheum on 15 October 2013 as lot 513. Foschi was, as the present painting makes obvious, a student of Andrea del Sart. In 1536 he collaborated with Pontormo in the latter’s frescoes for the Villa Medici in Careggi. Moreover, the painter was also influenced by Bronzino.
