A pasticcio portrait of Emperor Peter the Great of Russia,
oil on canvas, 60 x 51 cm, framed
We are grateful to Prof. Eduard Safarik, who recognised the present painting as a work by Schoonjans and identified the sitter as Peter the Great. Schoonjans was appointed imperial court painter in Vienna in 1695. During a stay in Berlin, he portrayed Frederick William, the Crown Prince of Prussia, combining typical features of traditional portraiture with elements of genre painting. This also holds true for the present composition. In both paintings, emphasis has been placed on the respective sitter’s exaggerated hairstyle, which is reminiscent of a lion’s mane. This is therefore not a realistic portrait of the Russian emperor, but the artist’s personal translation of the sitter’s qualities, so that it may be called a pasticcio. Safarik compares the present portrait to a further portrait of the Russian emperor by Adam Manyoki (cf. E. A. Safarik, Johann Kupezky, Ein Meister des Barockporträts, Rome 2011).
