A chair, Model No. 6, designed by August Thonet

A chair, Model No. 6, designed by August Thonet - Design

Vienna, 1850, manufactured by Gebrüder Thonet, Vienna, c. 1870, bent and stained beech, foot ring, the seat and medallion in the backrest upholstered and covered with velvet, punched factory mark: THONET, height 93 cm, width 44 cm, depth 54 cm, height of seat 46 cm. (DRAX)

This chair was first included in Thonet’s programme in 1859 as Model No. 13, if in a somewhat heavier and more compact version and presented at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1862. The ‘eye’ motifs inserted at the junctions of the legs are based on the idea of ornamental elements as they were first used by Thonet for the Liechtenstein chairs: here, however, they have been reduced from a decorative carved ornament to a minimalist loop as a formal element. In a form similar to that of Model No. 6, this spandrel solution can also be found in the chair made for the London World Fair of 1851.
