There is a particular reason for the images of the Fool’s Hat in paintings by Hausner. The painter himself claims that the Fool’s Hat is his double, his alter ego, embodying another aspect of Adam. Whilst he himself is stuck in reality, constrained by circumstances, and must deal with them as he finds them and perceive what he sees, thus being largely the non-participatory observer of his time, this counterpart represents a melancholy, introverted, socially distant persona, turned in on itself. This entity, only evident after some time in the painting, is part of the legend of Adam. This alter ego to the figure of Adam was created from the autonomous structure of painting itself. ...
