... There are Sainte Victoire mountains just as there are Sainte Victoire paintings. By the same token, there are mountains in the world like paintings in Brandl’s oeuvre. This shouldn’t be taken to mean “each has its own truth”. On the contrary, the truth is this continuous working, on oneself and on the things, with its reversibility and its movement, and where movement can only be understood in terms of its reversibility.
That is the meaning of the Medium of which Broch speaks, and that Merleau-Ponty would call a medium without a thing. Brandl’s entire works spring from this reversibility, from this medium of painting, itself the medium of reality, of this medium without things. On this basis, the mountain is something other than the peak, the landscape something other than the subject, and the painting something other than the object.
