…The more self-contained a sculpture, the more partnership, or better, polarity, it offers, in which the viewer themselves can be involved on a complex level. Pillhofer’s sculptures, as shown here, belong to the “polar” category, in which any appreciation is bound up with the gentle encroachment of the self-image. Several of the underlying concepts behind Pillhofer’s sculpture lead thoughtful viewers, and those with a historical perspective, deep into the classics, especially “classic modernity”, through to Maillol and Matisse, and should be completely understood as both being within, and stemming from, the development of the fine arts since 1945.
