(Antwerp 1581–1642)
The Triumph of Bacchus,
oil on panel, 60 x 94.4 cm, framed
Provenance:
Sotheby’s auction London, 16 December 1999, lot 152 (as the workshop of Frans Francken II)
This cheerful subject, the Triumph of Bacchus, was executed in a painting by Frans Francken in a somewhat smaller format (The Hague, S. Njistad Gallery, 1952), where the relationship between figures and landscape is somewhat altered.
Frans Francken seems to have been inspired by Bacchanal mit Silen by Andrea Mantegna. He had certainly seen Mannerist variants of this image, such as the drawing by Frederik Sustris.
