This painting comes with a certificate by Dr Walther Bernt.

The genre painter Dirck Hals spent his entire life in his hometown Haarlem in the shadow of his elder brother, Frans Hals. From an early stage he specialised in the depiction of boisterous parties, a subject he learnt from the Rotterdam painter Willem Buytewech, who lived in Haarlem between 1612 and 1617. In his genre scenes he combined Buytewech’s and his brother’s influence. The present painting was probably executed in the 1630s. Around that time, Dirck Hals changed his colour palette. In lieu of his formerly variegated bright colours, he limited himself to shades of ochre, brown and olive. The change in the use of colours can be observed not only in Dirk Hals’s works but also in the paintings of some of his contemporaries and is known as the ‘tonal phase’ in 18th-century Netherlandish painting.
