Like his younger brother Johann Georg, Philipp Ferdinand de Hamilton specialised in the genre of horse portraiture. The painter arrived in Vienna around 1700, together with his brother, who had previously been in the service of the first Prussian king in Berlin. His brother was appointed court and chamber painter in 1712. After Johann Georg’s death, Philipp Ferdinand, who had earlier worked for Prince Eugene of Savoy and the Princes of Liechtenstein and Schwarzenberg, succeeded him in this position. He produced not only portraits of horses, but also still lifes of game and depictions of exotic animals. The white stallion depicted here was probably a Lipizzan. The horse does not bear any of the markings of the imperial studs but may have been one of the stallions used for breeding that Emperor Charles VI bought in Spain in the 1730s.
