Francesco Solimena

Francesco Solimena - Obrazy starých mistr?

(Canale di Serino 1657–1747 Barra)
Noli me tangere,
oil on canvas, 69 x 50 cm, in a carved italian frame

We are very grateful to Professor Nicola Spinosa for confirming the attribution on the basis of a photograph.

The present painting is a characteristic work by Solimena and is related to a larger altarpiece that remains untraced. However, based on an inscription below an engraving after this now lost work published by Pietro Monaco (London, British Museum Inv. Nr. 1865,0520.738), we know that the altarpiece was once in the church of San Canziano in Venice or at the very least was owned in the 1730s by Francesco Vidiman, reportedly the Abbot of that church, who may have kept the painting in his family palazzo nearby. The Vidiman family, more usually referred to as Widmann, was one of the wealthy patrician families of la Serenissima and later joined the Rezzonico family; Variants of the composition are known (see for example Sotheby’s, London 7 July 2005, lot 170 and Christie’s, London, 21 April 2004, lot 85).
