The present work is a version after the prototype by Peter Paul Rubens in the Prado, Madrid. The work in the Prado is a modello that Rubens made as part of the commission for a cycle celebrating the Triumph of the Eucharist that was ordered by the Archduchess Isabella Clara Eugenia, Regentess of the Netherlands in c. 1625. This cycle by Rubens was ultimately used as a design for tapestries that were to decorate the Church of Saint Francis adjacent to the Descalzas Reales in Madrid.
