We are grateful to Professor Nicola Spinosa for confirming the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a photograph.
The present painting has been dated by Professor Nicola Spinosa to the early 1680s. It displays a fluent and painterly handling, together with subtle and warm colours, typical of Solimena’s early works. The present copper reveals the influence of Luca Giordano’s works also evident in Solimena’s fresco cycles at this time, as in the Glorification of the Life of Saint Francis in the church of Santa Maria Donnaregina in Naples from 1681 to 1684. The draped columns in the background stand as iconographic symbols of the purity of the Madonna and refer to the Immaculate Conception, and they are also featured in frescoes such as Saint Francis in Santa Maria Donnaregina (see F. Bologna, Francesco Solimena, 1956, p. 262, fig. 48).
