The artist was best known as a painter of genre pictures and oriental scenes. He studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna under Eduard van der Nüll and Joseph von Führich. His study trips took him to Paris where he studied the historical painter Horace Vernet in particular, and to Hungary, Italy, Dalmatia and Tunis. He later became an associate professor at the Vienna Academy.
