George Godwin Kilburne
(Norfolk 1839–1924 London)
Afternoon Tea, signed GG Kilburne, watercolour on paper, laid down on board, 37 x 53 cm, Passep., framed, (Hu)
George Godwin Kilburne first trained as a wood engraver with the Dalziel brothers in London, well-known engravers and illustrators. However, he increasingly turned towards the medium of watercolour and to oil painting for which his training as an engraver stood him in good stead, as evidenced in the precise details in his works. His repertoire included portraits of English society ladies whom he depicted with elaborate attention to detail. Kilburne’s particular talent is demonstrated in his successful portrayal of the materiality of the dresses, fabrics and surfaces.
