Pietro Barucci was initially self-taught before studying at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome under Achille Vertunni. Later he was one of the leading members of a group of Roman landscape painters who were highly sought after by upper class clients in Europe and North America. Barucci discovered the atmospheric subjects for his landscapes, genre scenes and seascapes in the Roman Campagna, the Apennines and the Maremma.
