The artist, whose name was actually Manuel Ussel De Guimbarda, and who signed his works Wssel de Guimbarda after his stay in Seville, was one of the most famous Spanish painters of the period. The painter’s family were well regarded amongst the upper classes of Seville society, and therefore it is unsurprising that he found many clients to commission his works. His repertoire included historical and religious subjects, as well as portraits of famous, distinguished personalities in Seville. By participating in many exhibitions, he achieved a high level of recognition, one that reached far beyond Seville. He spent the final years of his life in Carthage.
