Marcus Pernhart
(Untermieger 1824–1871 St. Ruprecht near Klagenfurt)
View of Malborghetto, oil on canvas, 47.4 x 64 cm, framed, (Rei)
Letter of authentication issued by Dr. Arnulf Rohsmann, dated 2009, available.
The landscape painter Marcus Pernhart is primarily known for his many drawings of Carinthian castles and palaces, their graphic documentation an important witness to these partly decayed edifices. The city depicted here, Malborghetto, was the setting for the Austrian defence against the French troops in 1809. Preventing the French from reaching the battle in Aspern consequently lead to the victory of the Austrian troops under Archduke Karl. Pernhart always remained loyal close to Carinthia, despite artistic connections with Vienna and a short stay in Munich where he attended the academy.
