The popularity of works by the portrait and genre painter Nikolai Kouznetsov reached their zenith during his years in Odessa (1897–1920). During this period a significant number of his works were gala portraits. The free and spirited manner in which Portrait of a Young Lady with Roses is painted is typical of Kouznetsov’s work at this time. It is strikingly similar in style to works including the Portrait of Anna Pankeeva (1908, museum in Saporoshje/Saporischschja).
