“My images construct themselves as the light grows; they disappear as the light dims. Their beginning and end are interchangeable. They are not a state: they are a transition.
The action of colour is the key element: only one area of colour is addressed at any one time. The communication of cold and warm values triggers tension and reciprocation. The colour seems to spread over the space of its own accord. The consistency of the colour determines its movement and the path along which the colour moves unconsciously on its journey. Sometimes it gets backed up; the coloured space moves in the wake of piles of pigment. The surface breathes.
The painter is responsible for this independent existence. The execution of the process of painting is within his control, and is thereby elevated to being a meditative process.”
Gotthard Graubner, 1963, on the occasion of the exhibition “Europäische Avantgarde” in Frankfurt in 1963.
