A set of six armchairs, Oswald Haerdtl (attributed to),

Vienna c. 1939, reduced walnut frame on four legs, horizontal and diagonal stretchers, slatted back, and upholstered seat, height approx. 92 cm, width approx. 58 cm, depth approx. 60 cm, height of seat approx. 50 cm. (MHA)

The present objects are not documented in literature, but a suite of furniture from 1938 for the apartment of Rosemarie Meyer registered in the catalogue raisonné under No. W145 shows strong similarities. Moreover, a chair from the apartment of the architect Oswald Haertl (1937) featuring the typically slatted back is reproduced on page 68 in the 1978 exhibition catalogue of the Vienna University of Applied Arts. What is also remarkable is that the solution for connecting the legs is identical – and is one that was used repeatedly from 1948 onwards.

Cf. Lit.:
Oswald Haerdtl 1899–1959, Hochschule für angewandte Kunst, Vienna 1978, pp. 66ff.; Adolph Stiller, Oswald Haerdtl – Architekt und Design, Vienna 2000, p. 235.

Provenance:
Formerly part of the original furnishings of Mautner Markhof’s Stadlau malt factory. The factory was fundamentally refurbished and extended in 1939.
