The Annunciation to the Virgin, oil on canvas, 102 x 76 cm framed
On the reverse an exhibition label from 1948 (as Francesco de Mura).
In its treatment of light and the figures, the present painting is reminiscent of Neapolitan works, such as those by Luca Giordano, Paolo de Mattei, and Francesco Solimena. It was probably painted for a small chapel and can be compared to Francesco de Mura’s Allegory of Abundance (Museum Duca di Martina, Naples) or his Allegory of Spring (Museum of Art, Toledo). We are grateful to Emilio Negro for suggesting the attribution to Francesco de Mura (Naples 1696–1782) (written communication). An alternative attribution to Giacinto Diana (Pozzuoli 1731–1804 Naples) has been proposed.
