In 1702 the merchant Engelbert Wichelhausen of Barmen moved to the capital city of Bremen. In 1737 he was elected senator. His wife, Susanne Passavant, came from a notable family of factory owners in Frankfurt. In the following generations, several senators and one of the mayors of Bremen were recruited from the Wichelhausen family.
