Alfred Kornberger *
(Vienna 1933–2002) “Gelbe Akte im Spielzimmer”, 1996, monogrammed, oil on canvas, 160 x 200 cm, stretcher, (K)
Reproduced and mentioned in:
Franz Smola, Alfred Kornberger, Der Akt als Innovation, published by Christian Brandstätter, Vienna 2007, page 212 and page 419, oeuvre no. 1103
Quoted from the above publication: Besides the numerous renderings of nude models posing in the artist’s studio, which Kornberger painted in the years around 1996, the artist also depicted nude models in a gym. The ambience of the gym in some ways resembles that of the studio: nudes casually moving in an interior. In one of these pictures, a woman supports herself on the bars, whilst another twirls a hoop around her hips. Kornberger intentionally renders the women undressed instead of wearing leotards. The artist also describes in detail the furnishings of the gym, with its various pieces of gymnastic apparatus. Among other things, one can recognize a pair of rings suspended from the ceiling (see oeuvre no. 1105). Such a pair of rings also and quite unexpectedly recurs in the scene “Gelbe Akte im Spielzimmer”, which dates from the same period. Said scene, however, rather seems to be set in the studio than in a gym. Five nudes are depicted reclining, standing, or seated on chairs and tables in diverse poses.
