Carlos Franqui (1921–2010) was an important Cuban poet, writer, journalist and art critic. Franqui acted as an unofficial cultural ambassador for the Cuban Revolution in Europe from 1963, there meeting intellectuals and artists, such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Alexander Calder and Jean-Paul Sartre. He promoted exchange between Cuba and contemporary artists in Europe, thus offering an antithesis to the Socialist Realism promulgated as an alternative model by the Soviet Union.
