designed by Herman Frederik Mertens in 1931/32, manufactured by Hopmi N. V., Utrecht, c. 1934, red lacquered tubular steel, moulded plywood seat and backrest, black lacquered beech armrests, chromium plated screwed joints, iron, brown felt, factory label: HOPMI OCTR. AANGEVR, height 91 cm, width 57 cm, depth 46 cm, height of seat 47 cm. (DR)
Hopmi was a factory producing bicycle parts in Utrecht. In cooperation with the furniture factory Utrechter Machinale Stoel- en Meubelfabrik CV – U. M. S., collapsible tubular steel furniture was produced on the basis of designs by Mertens. From 1932 on, this furniture was marketed as U. M. S. products, and in 1934 it was sold under the name of Hopmi. This type of tubular steel furniture after H. F. Mertens’s designs is rare, since it was only produced in small numbers.
